R.L. Jones, Jr. Airport reached its 50th year of operations on July 3, 2008. In celebration of this exciting milestone, Tulsa Airport Authority, along with numerous event partners, planned two days of activities to highlight the aircraft and businesses that utilize R.L. Jones, Jr. Airport (RVS).
On Friday, July 4 as part of the city's Freedom Fest 2008 activities at River West Festival Park, the 50th anniversary committee organized two waves of airplane demonstration flights. The first grouping included 32 general aviation aircraft, all based at RVS. The second grouping included 19 vintage airplanes from the Tulsa based Sooner Squadron. This grouping flew several formation passes along the river for nearly 45 minutes.
On Saturday, July 5 the public was invited to an airport open house to view static aircraft displays, learn about flight training opportunities, and take guided airport tours.
