Things We Read Now Available in TUL Military Lounge

Tulsa, OK – January 27, 2017 – Representatives from Things We Read will be at the Corporal Jared M. Shoemaker Military and Veterans Resource Lounge at Tulsa International Airport at 2 PM to officially present the first Things We Read book collection in Tulsa, OK. This will be the third collection in the state of Oklahoma, with the first founded at Lawton-Ft. Sill Regional Airport in 2013, and the second founded with the USO at Ft. Sill in 2016.

Things We Read collects the book lists of famous and influential people, and provides copies of the books, at no cost, to service member support organizations and communities in need, through book collections like the one that will be placed in the airport. The organization is a 501 (c)3 non-profit that was founded by two army officers while they were deployed to Iraq in 2011, in order to encourage their soldiers to come to reading as an escape from the stress of combat. The non-profit’s mission is to “enrich the lives of members of the military community by inspiring them to pursue a lifetime love of reading.”

American Airlines has donated the funds and support to keep the collection stocked with books for veterans and service members, and has also provided Things We Read with 100,000 AAdvantage Miles so the non-profit can travel to other airports to pick future locations to open book collections.

“Our mission is to make reading more accessible to members of the military community, and we do this by providing personal recommendations from the movers and shakers of our world,” said Garrison Haning, Co-Founder and Director of Things We Read. “This book collection is a window into the minds of some of the most interesting and influential people our country has to offer.”

“American Airlines has a long history of supporting military and veteran initiatives. We’re proud to partner with Things We Read to provide access to books that will inspire and engage the military community,” said Mark Easton, managing director, Aircraft Overhaul, American Airlines.

“Things We Read is a welcome addition to the Corporal Jared M. Shoemaker Lounge at Tulsa International Airport. We look forward to a long partnership in support of our continued effort to provide resources to members of our nation’s armed forces,” said Interim Airports Director, Alexis Higgins.

About Things We Read

Things We Read was founded in 2011 when two of our directors were serving as platoon leaders in Iraq. While overseas, they began collecting the book recommendations of well-respected leaders in their unit, and began distributing those lists among the soldiers. The soldiers liked the books, and in an effort to further their goal to encourage reading, the officers began posting the book lists on their website,

In 2013, Things We Read was granted 501 (c)3 status, and began the mission of donating and maintaining collections of recommended books to service member support organizations and communities in need.
