TUL Installs Video Phone
Tulsa, OK – November 18, 2011 – A public access Video Phone is now available at Tulsa International Airport for the hearing impaired. Communication Services for the Deaf, Inc. installed the phone at the airport with grant money from the U.S. Department of Commerce Broadband Technology Opportunities Program. The grant, part of Project Endeavor, was provided to install video phones in public areas as part of an effort to improve communication access for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Tulsa International Airport has had TTY Phones for the hearing impaired available for several years, and they operate by allowing users to either type or speak their message into a relay service. It is functional, but considered antiquated by the industry. The Video Phone allows the hearing impaired to communicate via sign language, lip reading, or an interpretive relay service.
“We strive to keep Tulsa International Airport accessible to all,” said Alexis Higgins, Deputy Airports Director of Marketing. “We’re excited to have this modern and improved communication technology available at TUL.”
The Airport’s Video Phone is free of charge, available to the public, and is located at the information desk near the Security Checkpoint.
